Life History of Aryabhata

Aryabhata is one of the most legendary figures in the history of mathematics and astronomy. Even though he lived over 1,500 years ago, his work still influences how we look at the stars today.

Here is a simple look at his life and achievements.

Early Life and Education

Aryabhata was born in 476 CE. While there is some debate about his exact birthplace, most historians believe he was born in Ashmaka (possibly modern-day Maharashtra or Andhra Pradesh) and later moved to Kusumapura (modern-day Patna, Bihar).

At that time, Patna was the capital of the Gupta Empire and a great center of learning. He eventually became the head of the famous Nalanda University, where he spent much of his time researching the universe.

Major Works

Aryabhata wrote several books, but his most famous work is the Aryabhatiya. He wrote this masterpiece when he was only 23 years old! It is a summary of mathematics and astronomy written in poetic verses.

1. The Father of "Zero"

While he didn't "invent" the symbol for zero as we know it today, he created a place-value system that used a placeholder for zero. This was a revolutionary step in math.

2. The Value of Pi ($\pi$)

He calculated the value of $\pi$ with incredible accuracy for his time. He stated that $\pi$ is approximately 3.1416, which is very close to the modern value we use in schools.

3. Astronomy and the Earth

Long before Western scientists, Aryabhata proposed two groundbreaking ideas:

  • Earth is Round: He explained that the Earth is a sphere and rotates on its own axis.

  • Day and Night: He explained that the movement of stars is actually caused by the Earth’s rotation, not because the stars are moving around us.

4. Solar and Lunar Eclipses

Before him, people believed that "demons" caused eclipses. Aryabhata used science to prove that:

  • A Lunar Eclipse happens when the Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon.

  • A Solar Eclipse happens when the Moon's shadow falls on the Earth.

Legacy

Aryabhata’s influence was so great that when India launched its first-ever satellite in 1975, they named it Aryabhata in his honor.

He proved that with observation and logic, humans can understand the secrets of the vast universe. He passed away around 550 CE, but his formulas and theories live on in every math textbook today.

Fun Fact: Aryabhata correctly calculated the length of a year to be 365 days, 6 hours, 12 minutes, and 30 seconds—only a few minutes off from the actual time!
